Overlook on Superior Hiking Trail

The Superior Hiking Trail

The rugged natural beauty of Lake Superior and the civilized touches of the Lodges, Inns and Bed and Breakfasts of Minnesota's North Shore bring you one of North America's finest hiking experiences, Lodge to Lodge Hiking along one of the continent's finest trails, the Superior Hiking Trail.

The Superior Hiking Trail is truly one of the continent's finest hiking trails. You find unexpected remoteness and some of the most dramatic scenery you can ever imagine. The Trail winds for 200 miles, high above Lake Superior from Two Harbors to the Canadian border along the ridgeline of the ancient Sawtooth Mountain Range. You can stand atop a high bluff and gaze across 50 miles of Lake Superior. Or you can rest beside rivers cascading though rocky gorges to the lake hundreds of feet below.

Hike through a northern forest of maple, aspen, birch, balsam, ancient cedar and towering pine. Wildlife abounds. You may find signs of deer, moose, wolf and beaver along with a great variety of birds along the trail. The Superior Hiking Trail was built as a cooperative venture between The Superior Hiking Trail Association (SHTA), the State of Minnesota's DNR, the USFS, Cook and Lake Counties and many private land owners. The ongoing maintenance and remaining construction of the trail is the primary responsibility of membership support to the SHTA. A portion of each lodge to lodge reservation includes membership in this organization.

See the Superior Hiking Trail Association page for more information about the trail.

A Superior Hiking Trail Guide Book is also available from our store.

The Experience

Hike all day, then step off the Trail into the comfort and hospitality of a fine North Shore lodge or inn for the night. The next morning you are on the trail again and off to another lodge. There are thirteen lodges, located between Schroeder and Grand Marais, from which to choose. Each lodge is unique. Accommodations include bed and breakfasts, historic inns, small hotels, resorts and condominiums.

How Does the Program Work?

First night and day: Typically, you arrive at your first accommodation late afternoon and spend the night. Dinner is on your own. Next morning you receive breakfast and pick up your bag trail lunch. After breakfast you drive your vehicle/luggage to the trailhead where you end that days hike; then you are shuttled to the beginning of that trailhead to begin your hike. Upon completion of your hike you drive to your next overnight lodging. NOTE Weekends and holidays require minimum number of two or more nights at an accommodation.
