Filed under: News, Events, Volunteer Trail Help, Trail Maintenance — admin @ 1:32 pm

Join other friends of the Banadad and Gunflint Trails at one of the Banadad’s Tree Planting Weekends. At Poplar Creek Guesthouse and cabins two weekends have been dedicated to helping reforest the area around the eastern end of the Banadad Ski Trail.

Four Hundred Red and White Pine seedlings will be planted along and near the eastern end of the Banadad.

The Tree Planting Weekend Special is $89/person plus tax and includes two nights  lodging with Barbara’s famous breakfast each morning, one lunch,  planting instructions, planting equipment and tree seedlings,

During the May 4-6 weekend. For those interested one lunch and dinners on Friday and Saturday at Gunflint Lodge is available for an additional $48 as part of the Annual Gunflint Green Up.

For those that do not need overnight accommodation but would like to join in on the planting - meet 10:00 A.M. on either of the two Saturdays at Poplar Creek Guesthouse B&B.

MUSHERS MOVE NORTH, AND BRING BACK THE GUNFLINT MAIL RUN

Filed under: News, Events — admin @ 4:58 pm

Despite the cancellation of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon in Duluth, dog sled racing will still take place at the end of January – in Grand Marais, one of the state’s only snow-covered spots.

Before the first running of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon in 1978, there was the Gunflint Mail Run. On Monday, January 30 and Tuesday, January 31, 2012, locals plan to revive the race in Grand Marais – one of the only snow-covered spots in the state.

“When the Beargrease race was cancelled due to lack of snow, the mushers here were really disappointed,” said Jack Stone, owner of Grand Marais-based Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply. “So the Cook County Dog Mushers and I started thinking: Why not invite the mushers north? We have snow and the conditions are great. So, we put the word out – and they can’t wait.”

The last time this happened was in 2007, when the Beargrease race was also canceled due to lack of snow. For this year’s version, Stone Harbor teamed up with The Landing at Devil Track, the Trail Center, the Cook County Dog Mushers, and the Cook County Ridge Riders snowmobile club to create the race route. It will include the opportunity to experience winter camping at Devil Track, similar to the Sawbill Winter Camping Village that would have taken place during the Beargrease event.

All of the Gunflint Mail Run events are timed to ensure that spectators and participants are still able to take part in the Beargrease-related events that have not been canceled. “It was important for us to make sure we aren’t taking anything away from that outstanding event, which we look forward to sponsoring every year,” said Stone. “We just want to give the mushers a chance to compete, since that is what they love – and what they have been training for.” According to Stone, almost all 16 of the available race spots were filled by mushers from Cook County within days of announcing the race.

The race will begin at approximately 4 pm on Monday, January 30, with an expected finish before noon on Tuesday, January 31. Mushers will travel from Devil Track up the Gunflint Trail, and then to the Trail Center, where they will have a five-hour layover. After that, they will make their way back down to Devil Track, for a total route of approximately 100 miles.

“Most people think there’s been nearly no snow in Minnesota this year, but there has been plenty of it up here on the Gunflint Trail,” said Sarah Hamilton, owner of the Trail Center. “We really enjoy being the turnaround point for the Beargrease each year, and are excited to hear that our musher friends will still be stopping by mid-race.”

Spectators are welcome to join in the festivities at the Trail Center, or at Devil Track. Winter camping at Devil Track will begin on Sunday evening and continue Monday night, with heated tents and other gear supplied by Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply. There will purse and other prizes for racers to win, plus a whole lot of fun for racers and spectators alike. If the weather allows, snow kiting demos, Marquette ski demos, and other winter activities will also be available on site, courtesy of Stone Harbor.

Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply is Northern Minnesota’s premier outdoor retailer, offering gear, tours, and rentals for all seasons. More information can be found at stoneharborws.com. The Landing offers fine dining at Devil Track Resort, a family-owned and operated resort located at Devil Track Lake in Grand Marais. More information can be found at deviltrackresort.com. The Trail Center has been a landmark on the Gunflint Trail since 1938. Originally built as a logging camp, it is now a full service restaurant, gas station, specialty foods, gift store, grocery shop, information center with cabins and a small motel. More information can be found at trailcenterlodge.com.

Note- on the way to Poplar Lake and upon the return from Trail Center musher will run along the road leading to Poplar Guesthouse B&B.

Man vs Dog Exciting New Winter Race

Filed under: News, Events, Event Special — admin @ 8:16 am

Bearskin Lodge will hold a different kind of ski race and it look like it will be great fun. Here is what it is all about-

On the morning of February 13th, 10:30 a,m.  Bearskin Lodge will host the Bearskin Wilderness Pursuit, Man versus Dog.

Bearskin Lodge, a Gunflint Trail landmark since 1925, specializes in exceptional cross-country skiing as
well as outstanding dog sled tours into the neighboring Boundary Waters Wilderness. Bearskin
Wilderness Pursuit, Man versus Dog will feature both of these activities. The race will pit mushers
against skiers in a unique mass start race. Mushers and skiers will race on separate side-by-side tracks,
competing head-to-head, but dog teams will travel a greater distance in consideration of their faster
pace. Winning skiers and mushers should cross the finish line at nearly the same time. Prizes will be
awarded for fastest skier, fastest musher, and fastest overall time, as well as various other categories.
This race, which starts at 10:30 AM, will be a thrilling event for both competitors and spectators. Most of
the race course will follow the shoreline and dip into the bays of East Bearskin Lake. The start, finish,
and head-to-head competition will be visible from just in front of the main lodge.

Be part of the excitement. Our mushing teams are already registered, but all levels of skiers are still
welcome to join in the competition. For more information or to register for the race go to
www.bearskin.com or call (218) 388 2292 or (800) 388 4170.

Gunflint Trail Christmas Spirit

Filed under: News, Events — admin @ 3:09 pm

Last night about 5:00 the doorbell rang at Poplar Creek Guesthouse B&B.  Upon answering the ring we found assembled outside some twenty carolers from Okontoe, a neighboring camp, on their annual Christmas caroling of their Gunflint neighbors. Upon being invited into the B&B the carolers sang several Christmas carols and then moved on to serenade other neighbors. In a sparely populated area such as winter on the Gunflint Trail, assembling twenty neighbors and then for such a group to travel the miles between caroling stops is quite an undertaking.

But then we will never forget a time many years ago when we operated Young’s Island B&B located on a nearby island a mile from shore. About this time of year we had driven our snowmobile across the lake to our landing and then went into town. That evening upon returning from town and arriving at the snowmobile we noted that there was a circle of many footprints that had gathered around the snowmobile. Deposited upon the snowmobile was a gift-wrapped plate of Christmas cookies. We found out later that the Okontoe carolers had been there and with us nowhere to be found the carolers decided that rather then waste a good opportunity for a Carole the group proceeded to serenade our snowmobile proxy.

One has to hand it to Okontoe’s Carolers neighborly Christmas spirit. The Okontoe Carolers certainly deserve a big thank you.

Northeast Minnesota Well Represented at B&B Conference Minneapolis

Filed under: News, Events — admin @ 6:50 am

The Minnesota Bed and Breakfast Association annual conference was held this past weekend in Minneapolis (April 18-20). The event attended by Bed and Breakfast owners throughout Minnesota was highlighted with speakers from as far away as New Jersey (Jay Karen CEO from Professional Association of Innkeepers International), Washington (Jeff Logan Vice President from Inside Out Solutions) and Texas (Sara Shusta from bedandbreakfast.com) and as close as St Paul (John Edman director of Explore Minnesota Tourism).

Barbara Young, from Grand Marais’s Poplar Creek Guesthouse B & B and the Association’s President chaired the conference. Other B & B’s in attendance from Northeast Minnesota included: A. J Thomson House, Mathew S. Burrows Inn, Ocott House, Solglimt on the Water B&B from Duluth; the Morning Glory B&B from Grand Rapids, Woodland Trails from Hinckley and the Mitchell-Tappan House from Hibbing.

According to Young, “The overall message of the gathering was that occupancy is improving and will continue to improve for the B & B industry and methods of social marketing (twitter, Face book, blogs etc.) are necessary to keep ahead of the curve. The trend is that in a sluggish economy vacationing close to home is popular, practical and safe. This certainly points to B & B opportunities.”

The conference featured workshops promoting packaging with trails and birding; methods of adding value to inn’s offerings and diversification of small business. Additional workshop leaders included a pastry chef; a photography business owner; a health department expert; an energy resource consultant; a marketing guru and a bird guide. Green Journey the Association's new green self-certification program was “kicked-off” at the conference. This unique program – the first Green Lodging certification program in Minnesota - awards from one up to five green leaves for varying degrees of sustainability for member owners of B&Bs. Innkeepers will be encouraged to keep making green improvements to their property in practical ways to improve their rating. The venue Crowne Plaza in Brooklyn Center was in fact chosen partially based on its green initiatives.

According to Pam Thorsen, the Association’s director, “We were impressed with their recycling, their energy savings and their willingness to work with us in not serving bottled water for example.” Many of the vendors at the event also were offering practical “green” solutions to innkeeper’s needs.” According to Young, “This was of one of our finest conferences. Through our workshops and vendors, we gained even more knowledge on improving and promoting our businesses and how we as innkeepers can better work together to improve all our businesses. In addition, I think I can speak for all who attended this year’s conference, we certainly had a great time.” The Minnesota Bed and Breakfast Association is a non-profit organization whose aim is promoting the state’s Quality Assured member inns as well as offering support, networking and education for innkeepers.

Organized in 1985 with 12 members, the Association now has 115 members The Assocation sponsors a conference annually, webinars at least monthly and is planning regional workshops promoting Green Journey, other Assocai\tion programs and to discuss members needs. A guidebook is available online to download or by mail from www.minnesotabb.org.
